Lighting a fire and building a shelter were everyday skills that our ancestors took for granted. When Year 7 spent a day at Green School, on the Hertfordshire/Buckinghamshire border they discovered that mankind has become distant from our natural heritage.
Following from their garden and survival project, focusing on the novel Hatchet telling the story of a boy who finds himself stranded in the Canadian wilderness, the group heard from Rod Anderson Boyle who has recently returned from a survival experience in the very same location.
The Olympians took on the Titans as the group split into House teams to see who could design and build the best shelter. The teams quickly learnt that although there isn’t necessarily always a right way to build a shelter, may be difficult and potentially hazardous ways.
Starting a fire, without matches, also provided a challenge, when the boys worked together in groups of two or three and some of the groups would have spent a chilly night in Wendover Woods if it had not been for a minibus waiting to whisk them back to warm, shelter and the comforts of the 21st century.
